  • Our second Ocean Decade Laboratory will be held from 15 to 17 September 2021 and will offer valuable insights and talks around the Ocean Decade Outcome: “A Predicted Ocean”.
    Note: All those who have participated in previous Laboratories will have to register again. One day before the Laboratory, you will receive an e-mail with check-in data for the event platform.
    Our Core Event will be streamed live, offering panel discussions and interviews on 15 September from 8:00 pm to 12:00 midnight CEST (владивостокское время: 16 сентября, 04:00-08:00). You will be able to interact and network with other participants and speakers via matchmaking or direct chats (text and video) also after the Core Event.
    A total of 31 Satellite Activities, hosted by a diverse range of experts from several fields and targeting various goals will be presented after the Core Event. They will consist of workshops, panel discussions along with interactive lectures around topics like novel deep-ocean observation methods, efficient data digitization, accurate climate emergency systems, predicting the future of coral reefs using AI, and lots more!
    The final Wrap-up on 17 September from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm CEST (владивостокское время: 18 сентября, 04:00-05:30) will also be live-streamed on our platform and will reflect the Core Event and the Satellite Activities while offering valuable insights and interviews with several participants.

  • The Ocean Decade Advisory Board: Call for Expert Members Nominations
    Deadline: 22 September 2021 (23.59 CEST, владивостокское время: 23 сентября, 07.59)
    The Decade Advisory Board will be a multi-stakeholder advisory body that will assist the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO in performing its function as coordinator of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, 2021-2030 (the 'Ocean Decade').
    The Board will report both to the IOC Governing Bodies and the IOC Executive Secretary. The Board’s advice to the IOC Governing Bodies will concern strategic elements of the Decade implementation, such as reviews of the Decade progress in moving towards the Decade societal outcomes and on the research work in the domains of Decade challenges, identifying gaps and opportunities, advising on data stewardship strategies, the development of resource mobilisation strategies, and supporting the development of a monitoring and evaluation framework of the Decade. The Board will also provide advice and operational support to the IOC Executive Secretary to facilitate the endorsement process of Decade Actions, specifically at the programme level.
    The Decade Advisory Board will comprise up to 15 expert members drawn from government, private sector, philanthropy, civil society, and the scientific community. They will serve in their individual capacity. Five representatives of United Nations entities will also sit on the Board.
    The 15 expert members of the Board will be nominated through an open Call for Nominations.

  • The UN Ocean Decade Kickoff Conference for the Western Pacific and its Adjacent Areas
    25-26 November 2021, Online

    The Conference will mark the launch of the UN Ocean Decade in the Western Pacific and its adjacent areas, and represent the beginning of the region-wide efforts in a substantive development and implementation of Decade Actions. It aims to catalyze partnerships among various ocean stakeholder communities in the region, and initiate co-design of transformative ocean science solutions to the Ocean Decade Challenges in order to achieve the Ocean Decade Outcomes.

    The two-day conference will be composed of:

    • a high-level segment featuring high level commitments from UN agencies, governments, business and private sectors, and other stakeholder groups; and
    • a series of interactive side events entitled “Decade Action Incubator” aiming to facilitate the development of potential Decade Actions such as Decade Programmes and Projects, and key cross-cutting issues including capacity development and Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs).

  • IUCN World Conservation Congress
    Side Event: The Ocean Decade and Biodiversity
    04 September 2021 | 14h00 CEST (владивостокское время: 22.00)
    Held as part of the IUCN World Conservation Congress, this event aims to generate discussion and reflection on the role of the Ocean Decade to generate critical ocean knowledge for the global biodiversity ambitions. Through the lens of major global biodiversity processes it will bring together speakers from science community, philanthropy and the United Nations to explore links and connections between stakeholder groups that can be optimized through the Ocean Decade to contribute to global biodiversity goals.
    For live participants: The event will be held in the Ocean and Islands Pavilion (Room H3). A limited number of seated and standing places are available. First come, first served!

  • OCEAN INNOVATION PRIZE
    Deadline: 15 September 2021
    Dear friends, collaborators, entrepreneurs and innovators,
    This is a reminder that we are 20 days away from the submission deadline for the Blue Climate Initiative's US $1 million Ocean Innovation Prize. This prize is part of the Blue Climate Initiative's Ocean Decade Programme.
    The Prize aims to inspire, fund, support, and showcase market-based innovations to mitigate climate change through ocean-related strategies.
    Winners will be invited to participate in the high-level 2022 Blue Climate Summit in French Polynesia where their projects will be profiled and introduced to leading investors, ocean experts and champions and to high-level Ocean Decade events.

  • First Ocean Decade Laboratory on 7 and 8 July 2021 on the Ocean Decade Outcome: “An Inspiring and Engaging Ocean”.
    Core Event will be streamed live, offering panel discussions and interviews on 7 July from 2:30 to 5:15 pm CEST (владивостокское время: 22:30 7 июля - 01:15 8 июля).
    Immediately following the Core Event, a one-hour interactive workshop entitled “Creating an Inspiring and Engaging Ocean” will be held for a limited number of participants to delve into possible Ocean Decade Actions and partnerships needed to achieve the goals of the Decade.
    Furthermore, there will take place a total of 15 Satellite Activities hosted by a variety of experts from different fields and with different objectives. These will be made up of workshops and panel discussions as well as interactive lectures on topics as diverse as ocean science, coastal protection, awareness and education, fashion, early career ocean professionals, diversity and much more! You can take part in surveys, quizzes and Q&A sessions as well as networking possibilities.
    The final Wrap-up on 8 July from 5:30 to 7 pm will also be streamed live on our platform and will reflect on the Core Event and Satellite Activities, offering valuable insights and interviews with some of the participants.

  • The Fourth Polar Data Forum, co-hosted by the Royal Belgian institute of Natural Sciences and the European Polar Board (EPB) at the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) in The Hague (NL) and online from September 20-24, 2021, is now accepting abstracts for oral presentations and posters. The submission deadline is June 18, 2021, with notice of acceptance provided on or before July 30.
    This event will be co-located with the Second Southern Ocean Regional Workshop for the UN Ocean Decade and Hackathon and focus on the polar oceans and will combine a two-day conference style meeting (September 23-24) in support of information exchange, with the remainder of the week using a "hackathon" approach that will build on the development work done in previous meetings and workshops (September 20-22). The forum registration deadline is September 10.

  • CALL FOR ONLINE SATELLITE ACTIVITIES
    The First International Ocean Decade Conference will offer various opportunities in terms of communications to generate awareness and catalyze action on the seven Decade Outcomes of the Ocean Decade on the path to “Creating the Ocean We Want”. Each of the UN Ocean Decade Laboratories will take place between July 2021 and May 2022.

    Ocean Decade Laboratory – An Inspiring and Engaging Ocean
    During a dedicated time slot of 48 hours, diverse types of virtual activities will be carried out as part of each Laboratory:

    • Core Event that will be organized by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research in partnership with relevant partners,
    • Satellite Activities that will be proposed and hosted by partners (please submit your contribution through the button below),
    • Closing Session in which Satellite Activity and the Core Event organizers will come together to report on the outcome of these events and identify follow up actions.

    Examples of Satellite Activities could include “pitch sessions” for new Ocean Decade programs or projects that are looking for partners, announcements of Decade Actions or commitments, Decade Action design workshops, networking forums, interactive Decade Action “incubation” or “match making” sessions, skills training via short “Master Classes”, virtual exhibitions or launch of videos or art initiatives, competitions or hackathons. The Satellite Activities will be selected by an evaluation panel comprised of diverse Ocean Decade stakeholders.
