The Anniversary of Yuri Nikolaevich Morgunov

September 5, 2026, marks the 80th birthday of Yuri Nikolaevich Morgunov, Doctor of Technical Sciences and Scientific Supervisor of the Laboratory of Acoustic Tomography.

Yuri Nikolaevich graduated from the V.V. Kuibyshev Far Eastern Polytechnic Institute, Faculty of Radio Electronics and Instrumentation, specializing in "Hydroacoustics and Ultrasonic Engineering." In 1973, he defended his Candidate dissertation, and in 2001, he defended his Doctoral dissertation "Development of Technical Means and Methods for Acoustic Monitoring of the Marine Environment." The academic title of Senior Researcher in the specialty "Armament and Military Equipment" was awarded to Yuri Nikolaevich in 1989, during his service in the Russian Navy (1973–1997).

Yuri Nikolaevich has been working at the POI FEB RAS since 1997. He joined the institute at the invitation of its Director, Academician of the RAS V.A. Akulichev, to head the Department of Technical Means for Ocean Research and the Laboratory of Instrumental Methods in Hydrophysics (since 2006 – the Laboratory of Acoustic Tomography).

Throughout his work at the Institute, Yuri Nikolaevich Morgunov has laid a solid methodological and technical foundation for solving problems in such areas as "Ocean Acoustic Tomography," "Remote Acoustic Methods and Means of Ocean Research," and "Underwater Acoustic Communication." Under his leadership, a long-range, high-precision navigation and communication system was developed to ensure the effective operation of robotic complexes. Additionally, his team created a hardware-software complex for acoustic monitoring of the variability in the structure and dynamics of temperature and current fields in shallow water conditions, which was implemented during the equipment of the acoustic-hydrophysical testing ground of the POI FEB RAS.

Yuri Nikolaevich is the author of more than 180 scientific works, including 7 patents for inventions and utility models. Under his scientific supervision, several Candidate dissertations have been successfully defended.

In addition to his scientific achievements, Yuri Nikolaevich is a member of various scientific councils and commissions, as well as the editorial board of the journal "Underwater Research and Robotics." His work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Order "For Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR" of the III degree, the Medal of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation "For Contribution to the Implementation of State Policy in the Field of Scientific and Technological Development," the Academician V.I. Il'ichev Prize for a series of works on "Development of Acoustic Means and Methods for the Study and Development of the World Ocean," and the Certificate of Honor of the RAS "For many years of work for the benefit of Russian science."
