Special Report. The Dance of Warm Currents
The Sea of Japan, with temperatures hitting a June-record 19 degrees Celsius in some areas, has brought a climate surprise to Vladivostok. Since all seas and oceans are interconnected, large-scale climate changes are shifting current systems worldwide. This planetary circulation has driven massive amounts of heat into the region, causing abnormally warm waters in Primorye.
FEB RAS Scientists Explain the Appearance of Warm-Water Fish Off the Coast of Vladivostok
The powerful, warm Pacific Kuroshio Current brings pufferfish, mako sharks, and massive bluefin tuna into the Vladivostok waters. This pattern was identified by scientists from the Il'ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute (POI FEB RAS) using satellites and mathematical models. Water flows passing through the Tsushima Strait travel to the coast of Japan, while a portion moves toward the coast of Primorye, influencing the migration of southern fish.

The role of methane in rising global temperatures is underestimated, and annual natural CH₄ emissions into the atmosphere may significantly exceed the figures stated in reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This is the conclusion reached by Russian scientists studying the fluxes of greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO₂), and methane (CH₄) in the Arctic "land–shelf–atmosphere" system.

In the protected zone of the Sea of Japan, where the waters of the Tumen River occasionally flow, complete anoxia was recorded in 2013—all living organisms died due to the mass die-off of phytoplankton. Such phenomena occur under specific hydrological conditions. Overall, "dead zones" are rare, but they do occur in the Amur and Surinsky bays, as well as in the estuaries of the Tumen and Razdolnaya rivers.
