Working Visit of RAS Vice-President Academician S.M. Aldoshin and Academician-Secretary of the RAS Department of Earth Sciences Academician N.S. Bortnikov to the POI FEB RAS

On September 4, 2026, the Il’ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (POI FEB RAS) was visited by Academician Sergey M. Aldoshin, RAS Vice-President, and Academician Nikolay S. Bortnikov, Academician-Secretary of the RAS Department of Earth Sciences. The guests were accompanied by Academician Grigory I. Dolgikh, Deputy Chairman of the FEB RAS.

The Academicians learned about the work of the Institute's departments and the Russian-Chinese Center for Ocean and Climate Studies, where scientists demonstrated their cutting-edge developments and research findings. Dr. Stanislav G. Dolgikh, Corresponding Member of the RAS and Head of the Laboratory of Nonlinear Hydrophysics and Natural Disasters, presented a laser-interferometric system to the guests. The complex was developed in cooperation with the team of the Laboratory of Geosphere Physics (headed by Dr. Vladimir A. Chupin).

The measuring complex enables the monitoring of geodynamic and geosphere processes, as well as the study of oscillations and waves in geospheres during the recording of catastrophic natural phenomena.

Dr. Yuri P. Vasilenko (PhD in Geography), Co-Head of the Russian-Chinese Center for Ocean and Climate Studies, spoke about the joint projects between POI FEB RAS and the First Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources of China. The guests were particularly interested in international scientific cooperation in a challenging geopolitical environment.

As a striking example of successful interaction, Dr. Vasilenko cited the fourth Russian-Chinese Arctic expedition on RV Akademik M.A. Lavrentyev, which is currently underway. The project is being implemented within the framework of a program for the comprehensive study of the paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic conditions of the Northwestern Pacific and the Eastern Arctic.

The leadership of the RAS was introduced to the team of the youth laboratory, established under the "Science" National Project. Dr. Nadezhda S. Syrbu (PhD in Geology and Mineralogy), head of the Laboratory for Integrated Research of Environment and Mineral Resources, emphasized that the laboratory has formed an active, young team conducting interdisciplinary research. This work includes the indication of mineral resources in the World Ocean (primarily in the seas of the Russian Far East) and the study of impacts on marine ecosystems.

The guests showed particular interest in the laboratory's plans for cooperation with an industrial partner, as well as the achievements of the geomicrobiology group. The young scientists are developing the scientific foundation for a biological product designed to clean up oil spills using marine benthic microorganisms. This promising environmental project has already been awarded the Primorsky Krai Governor's Prize.

Summing up the meeting, the guests noted that the POI FEB RAS maintains its position as one of the leading institutes in the Far East and demonstrates high potential in solving fundamental and applied problems related to the study of the World Ocean and the Earth's interior.
