The institute performs oceanological research in three main areas:
- Physical oceanology (area supervisor: Ph.D. V.B. Lobanov)
- Ocean and Atmosphere Physics (area supervisor: Dr.Sc. S.V. Prants)
- Satellite Oceanology (area supervisor: Dr.Sc. L.M. Mitnik)
The following fundamental studies are carried out within these areas:
• hydrology;
• climatology;
• hydrodynamics;
• hydrooptics;
• hydrophysics and dynamics of non-linear systems;
• satellite studies of physical phenomena;
• ocean-atmosphere interaction processes.
