  • In Your Face - The Exhibition 2022
    22 March 2022 15:00 - 1 July 2022 15:00 CEST (владивостокское время: 22 марта, 23:00 - 1 июля, 23:00)
Microplastics infiltrate our bodies, flow through the currents of rivers, are carried by the wind, fly into the ground, wash ashore and return to the ocean - no water is left untouched.
On the occasion of the UN World Water Day 2022, the organization Ocean. Now! will open the exhibition of the portrait series In Your Face. Due to high demand, it will be repeated for a consecutive year. #inyourface makes the barely visible yet universal presence of microplastics tangible. Through 56 portraits based on the artwork Microplastics II by renowned artist Swaantje Güntzel, it invites people to reflect on their consumer behavior. With the portrait of a symbolic beauty mask made of microplastic particles and a bleeding nose, famous faces make a public statement. The portraits’ microplastic, collected over a five-month period by dedicated volunteers on beaches around the world, points out that everything is connected to everything else.
The exhibition series starts on the coast in Sylt Westerland, sixteen flags and banners with quotes from the protagonists on the question "What does the ocean mean to you?" on the beach promenade draw attention to the exhibition in the Musikmuschel. The exhibition will then move on to Berlin and Lisbon. All portraits and statements can also be viewed in a digital gallery. The exhibition’s concept includes interactive elements such as an Instagram Face Filter, allowing visitors inside to create and share their own personal #inyourface portrait. "We want to contribute to social change and show people that we are many," says Meike Schützek, founder of Ocean. Now! "In doing so, we are also targeting decision-makers in politics and business." Via a digital microplastics quiz, exhibition visitors can test their knowledge and anonymously view the answers of others live.

Ocean Decade Laboratory - A Healthy and Resilient Ocean
    9 March 2022 16:00 - 11 March 2022 20:00 CET (владивостокское время: 10 марта, 01:00 - 12 марта, 05:00)
A healthy and resilient ocean in which marine ecosystems are mapped and protected. The ocean’s health is in decline. Unsustainable activities on land and in the ocean are accelerating the degradation of marine ecosystems through multiple impacts. To reduce the impacts, including climate change, they must first be measured. And then marine and costal ecosystems can be monitored, protected and healed.
Multiple human stressors in the form of unsustainable activities are part of a complex interaction with climate change. We do not know everything about ecosystems and their reactions to multiple stressors yet. But such knowledge is urgently required for creating tools for marine ecosystem management frameworks tasked with building resilience, monitoring thresholds and avoiding ecological tipping points. They will ensure that the ocean ecosystem functions sustainably, and its services continue to be provided for the benefit of society and the planet.

  • The Polar Initiative: The cold is getting hot! Scientific symposium: From Arctic to Antarctic
    24 February 2022 10:00 - 25 February 2022 18:00 CET (владивостокское время: 24 февраля, 19:00 - 26 февраля, 03:00)
Environmental changes in the Arctic and Antarctic are accelerating, mostly induced by human activities causing climate change. Not only do these changes affect local biophysical and living things in both poles - fauna and flora, [Arctic] local communities, and ecosystem functioning-, they also affect the broader climate, human (including social, economic, and cultural) and ecological systems far beyond polar regions.
Issues such as Arctic summer ice loss, permafrost thawing, Greenland ice sheet loss, or West Antarctic ice sheet disintegration which in itself holds enough ice to raise global sea levels by around 3.3. meters may then influence countries and stakeholders way beyond the riparian areas.
Taking this global approach to changes in the poles, the symposium will convene leading scientists to discuss how, how fast and in what ways changes in our planet’s polar regions are affecting Earth climate, living and social systems and how this concerns us all.
High level experts, practitioners as well as early career scientists of the two communities – Arctic, Antarctic – are brought together to offer a consolidated assessment and their views. Recommendations from the symposium will inform management and collective action in the poles to protect and enhance resilience of the ecosystems to climate change that can benefit societies and economies around the world.
The Symposium is being convened by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation with the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) as co-conveners in collaboration with the Oceanographic Institute, Prince Albert I of Monaco Foundation. The event is endorsed as an action of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

  • EMBracing the Ocean
    European Marine Board, 27.12.2021
EMB’s artist-in-residence programme ‘EMBracing the Ocean’ provides grants for creative individuals to inspire wide reaching societal change for Ocean sustainability by expanding societies’ understanding of the Ocean’s value, as well as the urgency of ensuring its health and resilience now and into the future.
The Ocean is too often out of sight and out of mind, and is increasingly under threat from human activities including global population growth, pollution (including atmospheric pollution, nutrients, plastics, noise), climate change, and over-fishing, causing the widespread loss and degradation of marine ecosystems and biodiversity. The next ten years will be crucial for ensuring a sustainable future for the Ocean and the benefits it provides for humanity, and to do this we must change the way that we interact with the Ocean. We must embrace and scale-up the many solutions that the Ocean provides to overcome global sustainability challenges. This includes the conservation and restoration of key marine ecosystems such as mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass; reducing marine pollution; sustainably managing our fisheries and other resource use and much more.
For the 2022 – 2023 programme, EMB will provide grants of 10,000 EURO to two awardees from any creative discipline including creative communications, visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, and installation art. During a 12-month residency, the awardees will produce and disseminate a new piece of work, or series of work, through a two-way co-design process with Ocean scientists. The work should focus on any Ocean science topic relevant for sustainable development, including but not limited to those covered by the marine science-policy work of the EMB, and/or wider activities within the framework of the Ocean Decade, and should aim to raise societal awareness of the chosen topic and inspire behavioural change for a sustainable future. The residency will run from spring 2022 to spring 2023.

  • One Ocean Summit
    9 February 2022 10:00 - 11 February 2022 18:00 CET (владивостокское время: 9 февраля, 19:00 - 11 февраля, 03:00)
The ocean covers more than 70% of the surface of our planet, yet it too often remains on the sidelines of major international and European agendas.
The ocean regulates the main elements of environmental balance - the climate in particular - and provides rich resources of all types. It is a major vehicle of economic exchange; an essential link between countries and human communities. Today, the ocean is threatened by many adversities such as climate change, pollution due to plastic, and, in particular, the overexploitation of marine resources.
To mobilise the international community and take concrete action to reduce these adverse effects on the ocean, the President of the French Republic has decided to organise a One Planet Summit dedicated to the Ocean - the "One Ocean Summit", from 9 to 11 February 2022, in Brest, France.

  • The future of seafood in a changed ocean
    9 February 2022 18:00 - 19:30 GMT (владивостокское время: 10 февраля, 04:00-05:30)
Fishing and aquaculture are threatened by ocean warming, ocean acidification, and deoxygenation that are the result of human kind’s emission of Green House Gases. This industry sector is also a contributor to GHG emissions, and its depletion of biomass has a significant effect on the ocean’s own biological carbon pump.
Because of our rapidly changing global ocean, risk exposures will require safeguarding critical infrastructure and communities in order to maintain long-term supply chain resilience. This industry sector must act now to assess its vulnerabilities, and in turn, prepare plans to adapt to sea level rise, stronger storms, harmful algal blooms, loss of sea ice, and shifts in species migration patterns, as well as ocean chemistry changes including oxygen levels and acidification. The seafood industry must anticipate responses to climate change mitigation activities as well. As it adapts to these threats to the industry’s core business, how will the seafood sector interact with ocean-based renewable energy production intended to help economies move away from fossil fuels?
Likewise, how will the seafood industry interact with restoration and conservation projects that take up and store carbon, which also strengthen resilience to climate change impacts through natural coastal ecosystem defenses?
And, if regulators seek to protect the ocean’s biological carbon pump, what role is there for this industry sector in protecting and restoring the ocean’s carbon cycle? How will the different forms of geo-engineering to technofix climate change affect the seafood sector? And, how will companies in this sector have to change their own practices to contribute to net-zero by 2050?

    2. 15 октября 2021 г. был объявлен 2-й призыв к действиям в рамках Десятилетия. В рамках 2-го призыва запрашиваются программы по следующим темам:
    - загрязнение морской среды;
    - управление экосистемами и их устойчивость;
    - взаимосвязь климата и океана
    и другим.
  • The launch event of the Odyssey Project led by OceanOPS
Tuesday February 8, 02:00-17:00 CET (владивостокское время: 23:00-02:00)
During the last 10 years, OceanOPS has developed innovative partnerships with civil society, particularly with NGOs and racing yachts to deploy observing instruments in hard-to-reach locations, contributing to the real-time observation and stewardship of the ocean with low carbon footprints. These partnerships and activities were even more strengthened during the pandemic, when deployment of oceanographic instruments by research vessels was deeply impacted by Covid-19 restrictions.
The Odyssey project embodies the level of response we need to face climate issues and will help strengthen international collaborations within and outside the ocean observing community. These collaborations, based on the observations’ collection, data sharing and analyses, scientific and technological developments, will be essential to develop such a project.
Conscious of the importance of civil society engagement to support ocean observations and that the development and sustainability of the GOOS urgently need targeted increases in observations, OceanOPS will coordinate the Odyssey Project.
The Project is addressed to an international audience including scientists, civil society, private sphere, shipping industry, sailing communities, fishing, and all people who are interested in contributing to marine observations.
Registration is necessary to attend the event (in-person or virtually) and to obtain the meeting link connection information. Registration, information about the project and the program of the event can be found here. Please regularly check the registration page since a detailed program will be added closer to the event.
Should you have any questions, please contact Emanuela Rusciano: erusciano@ocean-ops.org.
  • IOC/OTGA/RTC Ghana: Earth Observation data and techniques for fisheries management (online)
    24 January 2022 09:00 - 4 February 2022 17:00 GMT (владивостокское время: 24 января, 19:00 - 5 февраля, 03:00)
Fishing vessel traffic data derived from Automatic Identification System (AIS) has become an essential component for building fisheries intelligence. Enforce and related fisheries management strategies rely on such information to curb illegal fishing, plan and implement policies for the sustainability of marine living resources. Fisheries managers and enforcers require specialized skills to processes the large volume of positional, navigational and voyage related information embedded in AIS data. Open-source programming software such as Python has lots of third-party modules for building packages and functions. This makes Python an asset for the creation of customized data processing, analyses and visualization to support in making informed decisions in the management of natural resources. This training course will provide participants an understanding of the movement of fishing vessels and skills in processing AIS data.
